Seungmin's journey began with a second-place finish in JYP Entertainment's 13th Open Audition on February 23, 2017, which led to his acceptance as a trainee. He appeared on the survival show Stray Kids in 2017, which allowed him to debut as a member. On July 24, 2018, he was selected as a Regular MC of After School Club alongside Jimin and Han Hee-jun, and from July 12 to October 11, 2019, he MC'd for We K-Pop with Kim Shin-young, 2PM's Nichkhun, and SF9's Inseong. On March 18, 2024, he was selected as the first pitch for a special game between Team Korea and the LA Dodgers as part of the MLB World Tour Seoul Series 2024 with Coupang Play. In September 2023, Seungmin, along with fellow Stray Kids members Lee Know and Hyunjin, was involved in a car accident that led to their absence from the Global Citizen Festival performance; none sustained serious injuries. In Their Own Story

Growing up in Seoul, South Korea, Seungmin wanted to become a baseball player and played as a right-handed pitcher when he was young. He graduated from Chungdam High School on February 14, 2019. His musical journey includes being one of the most prolific contributors to Stray Kids' SKZ-Record/Player project as of July 2025, with solo original songs like "Stars and Raindrops" (released December 21, 2022) and "As We Are" (released December 2024 as part of the special album Hop). He also released duets including "Cinema" with Lee Know (March 2025) and "Respirator" with Han (June 2024). His cover versions include six solo covers on SKZ-Record/Player, covering artists like Day6, Gaho, Sandeul, Baekhyun, Justin Bieber, and Younha. In 2024, he began his own mini-series Song By on Stray Kids' YouTube channel, covering songs by IU, 2NE1, Billie Eilish, Lauv, Radiohead, and Yoasobi, concluding with its tenth episode in June 2025.
